Grand Tourtours

Performance bus trips in and between Vienna, Schwaz, Bolzano, and Munich
December 2 and December 3, 2017

Grand Tourtours is a cross-border series of performances produced and experienced en route. The joint project is realized by Galerie der Stadt Schwaz (A), the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna (A), the Akademie der Bildenden Künste München (D), the association Tiroler Künstler*schaft (A), the Faculty of Design and Art of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano (I), and the Halle für Kunst und Medien – Künstlerhaus Graz (A).

The undertaking aims at both coming up to the special social and physical character of performance art and encouraging a Europe of regions in the sphere of contemporary art.

Grand Tourtours intends to provide a start for possible institutional collaborative projects that will revitalize the old transit routes across the Alps by means of art. The mix of partners comprises art academies as well as exhibition spaces and other art institutions. The respective local public will be invited to participate.

A Salon d’Art on Wheels
The project was launched on June 21, 2017 in the context of the 325th anniversary festivities of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna as well as developed on the occasion of the decennial of its Performative Art Studio. The performance bus departed from the Academy’s main building on Schillerplatz to head for its new locations into which its facilities would be moving during the current conversion phase. The event included three tours for the public.

The second part of the project in early December 2017 gathers different art institutions located along Europe’s most important north-south route. This route was already one of the central trade channels between Venice and Augsburg in the early fifteenth century and looks back on a lively history. The tour leaves from Schwaz and will take its participants to Innsbruck before continuing to Bolzano and Munich. The bus will make performance stops at special places.

The combination of performance, choreography, and museum is an issue under intense negotiation on an international scale. Grand Grandtours literally gets these negotiations going. The title is a phonetical combination of “torture” and “grand tour” and addresses the field of tension between introspective self-discovery and the quest for experience in the outer world. Group relations are given center stage by the form of travelling by bus.
